Red Lake Fall Classic Final Results Posted by Chris Pollard on Sunday, September 5th, 2010 at 10:35:21 PM Heavy morning fog delayed the start of fishing this morning, but in the end, Lonnie Lundmark struck again - capturing the Red Lake Fall Classic championship with partner Joe Barron. It's the second major win for Lundmark this year, after landing the Dryden Walleye Masters title in June. Here are your official top 5 results: 1. Joe Barron, Lonnie Lundmark - 27.92 2. Bob O'Donohue, Cliff Sutherland - 27.28 3. Mitch Brisson, Guy Vermette - 27.16 4. Wayne Cerven, Stan Cerven - 26.62 5. Jeff Laurin, Craig Stapon - 25.88 4th place Wayne and Stan Cerven also picked up some extra cash for landing the biggest walleye of the tournament this morning. It tippled the scales at 7.82lbs. Atom players hit the ice at 5 o'clock, the PeeWee's will follow at 6:40, while the Bantam's conclude try-out's at 8:20. Team selection will take place a week from today. The Paperkings are sponsored by the Best Western, Source for Sports and the Holiday Inn. Kenora Tops Dryden in Pre-Season Game Posted by Mike Ebbeling on Friday, September 3rd, 2010 at 8:33:44 AM The youth and inexperience of the Dryden Eagle Football team showed Thursday as the Blue and Gold dropped a 31-6 decision to the Beaver Brae Broncos in Kenora. Coach Geoff Zilkalns says the exhibition game was a chance to see what his players could do in a game situation. Zilkans says he wasn't worried about the score and notes he see's a number of positives to move forward on. Jeremy Euler scored Dryden's only major on an 11-yard run in the third quarter. The Eagles and Broncos do it again for real a week from today in Kenora. Swimmers will hit the water for the first time next Tuesday. Spokesperson Michelle De Coninck says they are offering a new program this year. The Masters program is geared to anyone over the age of 18 and is open to competitive or casual swimmers. The club is accepting registration for all ages and skill levels. The Eagles battle the Beaver Brae Broncos in exhibition play today (Thursday) in Kenora. Defensive Coordinator Neil McLeod says they are looking for the kids to be mentally sharp and playing fundamental football. McLeod says the strength of this year's team is youth, with a good mix of veterans. The Eagles and Broncos do it again for real next Friday in Kenora. Kick-Off today (Thursday) is 3:00. Joel Zieroth, Tyler Boon and Geoff Kitt joined the Can/Am 'AAA' Selects and captured gold at the Gold Medal Festival in Minneapolis. The cross-border team breezed through the round robin with a perfect record, before downing the United All-Stars 2-1 in the Championship game. The three are members of the Dryden Paperkings. Offence Shines at Dryden Arena Posted by Mike Ebbeling on Thursday, September 2nd, 2010 at 5:25:20 AM If Wednesday night's pre-season game is in any indication, there will be no shortage of offense for the Dryden Ice Dogs and Fort Frances Lakers this season. Former Ice Dog Matt Caulfield burned his former team, scoring mid-way through overtime as the Lakers knocked off the Ice Dogs 6-5. Dryden staked a 2-0 lead in the first period thanks to a short-handed goal from Dallas Crum and a power-play marker from Alex Galbraith. Both teams then combined for 7-goals in the second period, with Dryden's Ben McClellan, Jon Mitchell and Connor Foster finding the back of the net. The Ice Dogs looked like they were going to leave the Memorial Arena with a win, before their hopes were dashed by Michael Jourdain with 42-seconds left in the game. The Lakers peppered 38-shots on Curtis Barker and Christian Mueller. Dryden replied with 26-shots. The Ice Dogs are back on home ice Saturday night against Sioux Lookout. Camp continues and Coach Randy Lulashnick says he saw a couple of surprises. Lulashnick says while they aren't ready for the Junior level yet, he was really impressed with local products Whitney Van Horne and Landon Bowen. Sioux Lookout play's its first tune-up game Friday in Fort Frances. Dryden's Scott Dingwall a Winner in International Falls Posted by Mike Ebbeling on Wednesday, September 1st, 2010 at 9:57:03 AM A Northwestern Ontario team has become the first to win the International Falls Bass Championship twice. Dryden's Scott Dingwall and Jeff Gustafson won this year's title by weighing in with over 30-pounds of bass last weekend. Gustafson and Dingwall won the inaugural tournament in 2005 by beating Travis Peterson and Scott Mattson who finished second again this year. (Wednesday) The Dogs host the Fort Frances Lakers in exhibition play. Coach Clint Mylymok says he's treating this like a regular season game. Mylymok notes he's seen no surprises at camp so far. However, he stresses game action is where he's looking for some players to raise the level of their game. Game time is 7:30 at the Dryden Memorial Arena. The Dryden District Curling Club is hosting a barbeque, registration and information session at Cooper Park from 4 until 8. Vice-President Rod Armit says they hope to attract new curlers. Armit says fees have not gone up this year and equipment is available free of charge at Eagles Landing. The Club is also hosting a number of Bonspiel's this season, including the Fireman's Bonspiel. Ice Edge Holdings has announced that they are in advanced discussions with the East Coast Hockey League. The group wants to bring an expansion franchise to the City to be housed in a new Arena. Ice Edge CEO Anthony Leblanc says the deal is contingent on Thunder Bay constructing a new Arena. The Dump Bears upset 3-time defending champion Beer Gang 19-10 in the Final Game. The Time-Out Sports Misfits knocked off the Slogans 10-6 in the 'B' Side Final. The Whipper Snappers claimed the 'C' side title with a thrilling 19-17 victory over the Powerhouse. Megan Johnson was named the Most Improved Player after an outstanding season with the Square One Printwear Sluggers. Her teammate, Paula Johnson, was handed the honour of Most Valuable Player in the League. The Merit Award went to Megan Pinette for her play in the League as well as representing Dryden Ladies Fastball at the Western-Nationals. Two days after the Men's team captured the Dryden Soccer Championship, the Women followed suit. The Dryden GM Benifca upset the number 1 ranked Northtown Masonry Steelers 2-0 Tuesday night in the Final Game. Tianna Markowski opened the scoring, while Carly Brown added the insurance goal in the second half. An information session and fund-raising barbeque will be held next Tuesday at Cooper Park. All proceeds will go directly to the operating expenses of the Dryden District Curling Club. Registration fees remain unchanged from last year. The Club will be hosting 2-Bonspiels and a Funspiel this season and they also hope to launch a zone playoff which could send someone to this year's Brier.
