National Fishing Week is underway.
The Canadian Safety Boating Council wants as many people to enjoy reeling in their next trophy fish but to remember your safety as well.
Director Ian Gibson says a life jacket is a small step in keeping yourself safe out on the water.
Gibson also suggests having a back-up plan if you fall overboard.
He says that can be as easy as a rope with a loop in it that you can use both your arms and your legs by putting your foot in that loop to get back in the boat.
The CSBC says 80% of boaters drown each year because they weren’t wearing a lifejacket.
Gibson is also concerned about impaired driving, noting alcohol alone is traditionally associated with out 40% of boating fatalities.
