The issue of hiring an economic development officer was one of the highlights of the All-Candidates Forum in Dryden Tuesday night.
Greg Wilson says the City shouldn’t be throwing money at economic problem issues.
He says the person might not have the answer and bring in business with a magic bullet.
Wilson suggested contracting out economic development services.
He notes Fort Frances follows a similar practice.
Wilson says if they find someone who is really good in the process, then maybe the City can consider hiring them.
Shayne MacKinnon says the Dryden Development Corporation should be looked at.
He says they need to determine the value and structure of the organization.
MacKinnon says if they decide to discontinue the DDC, then he will ask Council to form an economic division in the City.
He stresses they need someone in that office who has the skills and budget to actively pursue economic development.
Craig Nuttall believes they have a working plan in place.
He says they have an independent committee with 2-Councillors on it.
Nuttall says he works closely with the economic development team and they continue to work with groups such as Treasury Metals.
He stresses his goal is to sell Dryden.
