Environmental Commissioner Gord Miller says ineffective oversight by the Ontario Government is allowing mining companies to illegally construct mining camps and airstrips in the Far North.
That is one of a number of findings in Miller’s Annual Report.
He says the Ministry of Natural Resources has no presence in this Region and that’s why these activities are happening.
Miller adds the Ministry is on the verge of losing control of the public land in the Far North.
Natural Resources Minister Linda Jeffrey calls the commissioner’s assessment a “stretch” and says her Ministry has great staff in the North.
