There are no plans by the Ford government to eliminate front licence plates on vehicles.
Transportation Minister Jeff Yurek is commenting on concerns from police groups over rumours that it was going to happen when the new look licence plates are put into circulation in the fall.
Yurek emphasizes “they (plates) are going to be at the front and rear of the car, it’s not a policy of this government to be removing them.”
He suggests keeping both the front and rear licence plates is part of the government’s efforts to help police do their jobs.
The plates themselves will be made with a new “material enhanced” product which will make them last long which the government hopes will save millions of dollars every year.
The new plates will not be mandatory, that is, they will be given out to new vehicle owners who have never been issued a licence plate before and for those wishing to switch from the current plates.
The government says you will be allowed to keep your current plates for as long as they are in good condition.
