Recognizing the effects of the residential school system and talking about reconciliation.
Gord Downie’s Secret Path was viewed in Sioux Lookout last week, as well as a discussion panel that took place with residential school survivors and community leaders.
The film was inspired by Chanie Wenjack, the 12-year-old boy who tried to walk 600-kilometres home from a residential school in Kenora some 50-years ago, but was found frozen to death beside a railway track.
His sister, Pearl Wenjack, believes a dialogue has been opening up.
She says Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has been instrumental in the change of views relating to Indigenous right.
Wenjack was happy with the turnout to the event and was thankful for Sioux Lookout Mayor Doug Lawrance being in attendance.
