Years of lobbying has paid off for labour and poverty groups in Ontario.
The provincial government has agreed to increase the minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2019.
Chris Buckley is the President of the Ontario Federation of Labour and he says many people worked behind the scenes to make this happen.
Buckley stresses it just proves that when people take issues seriously and start having the conversation, positive things can happen across the province.
He calls the changes “the right they to do” and comes following considerable lobbying and activism across Ontario.
Other changes included in the Fair Workplaces and Better Jobs Act include 10 days of emergency leave for employees, including two paid for by the employer, and three weeks of holiday time after five years
in a job.
It also allows part-time workers to be paid the same hourly rate if they are doing full-time work.
