A long-serving northwestern Ontario First Nations chief has died.
Family members report Couchiching First Nation Chief Chuck McPherson died yesterday in his home.
McPherson was first elected chief in 1986 and held onto the position until 1988.
He was returned to office in 1998.
Friends and family describe McPherson as a strong advocate for his community and native rights.
He’s best known for setting up a toll booth on Highway 11 in 2010.
The move was in protest of housing as well as a lack of compensation for the road that was build on aboriginal land.
McPherson leaves behind his wife and three sons.
There is no word yet on funeral arrangements.
