A provincial police officer in Sioux Lookout has been cleared of any wrongdoing during a May arrest in Centennial Park.
Officers were investigating a fight in the park.
When they attempted to place one of the individuals under arrest they ran.
A short time later officers were able to locate and arrest the suspect, but at some point during the interaction, their elbow was broken.
The Special Investigations Unit’s Director Joseph Martino says the force used by officers appeared to be required during the arrest.
“A tackle and stomp would appear commensurate with the exigencies of the moment,” he explained. “In the case of the former, the force seemed a reasonable tactic, short of a resort to less-lethal weaponry, to thwart the Complainant’s escape.”
The Special Investigations Unit can investigate the actions of officials like police officers, special constables of the Niagara Parks Commission or peace officers under the Legislative Assembly Act, that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
