Members of the Dryden Ontario Provincial Police are seeing increased numbers of ATV and ORV crashes.
This includes ones that are alcohol induced.
Compared to last year, there were 23 ATV fatalities investigated by the OPP in the province.
Operators are reminded that driving on or off a roadway while impaired has the same penalties as operating a motor vehicle.
The OPP are reminding drivers of the requirements to operate these vehicles in Ontario:
- The owner must ensure the driver is a least 12 years of age for off-road driving.
- The operator must be 16 years of age and hold a minimum class G2/M2 driver’s license to drive on or cross a roadway.
- Must wear an approved motorcycle helmet at all times.
- Must have valid insurance and registration if not on private property.
- Must operate in the same direction as traffic on the shoulder if on a public roadway.
- On a roadway, you cannot exceed 20 km if the speed limit is 50 km/h. If speed limits exceed 50 km/h, you still cannot exceed.
- Side by sides are now permitted on the shoulder of public roads and must obey the same speed limits listed above.
