One-half of the federal Green Party’s leadership team is resigning.
Jonathan Pedneault says he is stepping down as co-leader for personal reasons.
He would not elaborate but expressed his appreciation for working with Elizabeth May, who was elected with Pedneault as co-leaders by Green Party members in 2022.
“It’s been the honour of a lifetime to serve alongside Elizabeth May and Mike Morris, to outstanding members of Parliament who dedicate their every awakened hour to Canadians in a way that sadly, partisan politics today in Ottawa doesn’t quite exemplify,” says Pedneault.
It leaves Elizabeth May as the sole leader of the Greens.
She says she is heartbroken by the decision.
“I respect him, I love him. I couldn’t have asked for a better partner, a better sounding board, a better voice for so many core issues that face Canadian society, particularly issues of inequality, income distribution,” says May,
The party had not yet changed its constitution allowing co-leadership.
A previous meeting to discuss the issue was postponed.
May say she will continue to press the idea with the intent of having another co-leader in place before the next federal election.
