Prime Minister Justin Trudeau needs to resign as party leader, according to one New Brunswick Liberal MP.
Wayne Long made the comments in a post on social media and in an email to the Liberal caucus.
Long is the first member of the Liberal caucus to openly call for Trudeau’s resignation after last week’s stunning election loss in the riding of Toronto-St. Paul’s.
Conservative candidate Don Stewart won the longtime federal Liberal stronghold with 42.1 per cent of the votes.
Long, who represents Saint John-Rothesay, said he is proud of what the Liberals have accomplished under Trudeau over the past nine years.
“I just feel that it’s time to let new leadership with a new vision take the wheel. There are many Liberals that don’t recognize us anymore,” said Long.
Long has been an outspoken member of Parliament during his time, often going against party lines.
The three-term MP previously announced that he does not plan to reoffer in the next federal election.
