EDWARD J. ENGEL
June 22, 1940 – April 4, 2023
Edward was born June 22, 1940 in Garson, MB and passed away on April 4, 2023 at the Dryden Regional Health Centre with his youngest daughter and son-in-law by his side.
Edward is survived by his children; Donald (Tanya), Donna (Stan), Lorna (Warren), and Michele (Jamie), grandchildren; Brett (Noelle), Michael (Karrah), Felicia (Curtis), Kevin, and Audrey, step-grandchildren; Shantacy (Bob), Jireh, and Jordan, 15 great–grandchildren, siblings; Lloyd (Vicki), Marge, Len (Linda), and Diane (Lyle), in-laws; Sharon, Lana, Linda, and Ben (Maxine), as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members.
Edward was predeceased by his wife Sheila (2018), parents Tony and Jean Engel, in-laws Gordon and Ursula Maggrah, sisters Carol and Joyce, and nephew Jared.
After moving to the Dryden/Wabigoon area, Ed and Sheila (nee Maggrah) met and were married on Jan 31, 1959 and had four children. After moving back and forth to Winnipeg and back a few times, they finally settled in Wabigoon for good in 1973 where they resided the rest of their days.
Dad was a truck driver for over 50 years with several different companies. You name it and he may have hauled it. He was an avid sports fan. You could guarantee if there was a Winnipeg Jets, Toronto Blue Jays or Winnipeg Blue Bombers game on TV, he would be watching. He also enjoyed watching Nascar and the Raptors. He also played many sports over the years. From a co-owner of a stock car (pit crew) in early years, or baseball,curling, hockey, horseshoes, shuffleboard, and bowling to name a few.
When the grandkids started coming, he was known as Grampy but also as Grumpy or Grumpy Ed. He may have had a tough exterior but definitely had a soft spot for the grandkids.
In his later years, after he finally retired, he was a regular having a coffee at the Towers or Green Acres. He was known for stirring his coffee quite loudly (clink clink clink).
Ed’s family would like to thank the nurses at DRHC who did their best to make sure Dad was as comfortable as possible in hisfinal days. Also, for their comfort to us during the difficult time.
We love and will miss you, Dad. And I can hear his response now…………. “Whatever”
A Celebration of Life will take place on Tuesday, April 11, 2023 at 1 p.m. at the Wabigoon Hall.
Interment will take place at a later date.
