Conservation Officers with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry are reminding ice hut owners to remove them while it’s still safe to do so – to avoid facing fines or charges.
The MNRF doesn’t provide a specific date for ice hut removal for our region, but they are required to be removed before ice break-up under the Public Lands Act of Ontario.
The ministry says any ice huts that remain on the ice will be investigated and fines can be laid. Owners are also responsible for the area around their hut and are asked to remove any debris or garbage.
Anglers are also reminded that the walleye fishing season is over on the Winnipeg River System by 12 a.m. tomorrow., but the remainder of the region is unaffected.
The walleye fishing season will close throughout the rest of northwestern Ontario’s Zones 4, 5 and 6 on April 14 and resumes by the May Long Weekend, unless otherwise specified by the MNRF.
The MNRF reminds the public that natural resources violations can be reported to the ministry’s TIPS line at 1-877-847-7667 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
