Elizabeth (Betty) Cairo
September 3rd, 1931 – March 3rd, 2023
In loving memory of Betty Cairo (nee Roche), aged 91 years, who passed away peacefully with her family at her side on March 3rd, 2023. Betty was born in Wexford County, Ireland on September 3rd, 1931. Growing up on a farm, as one of the oldest of 12 children, her natural caregiving abilities quickly became apparent.
Her inherent kindness and caring nature greatly contributed to a successful, nursing career. At the age of 18, Betty started her nursing education in Penzance in Cornwall, England and upon graduation, worked in Bristol, England before deciding to move to Canada. Betty worked as a Nurse in several different cities across Canada before settling in Dryden, Ontario. Soon after moving to Dryden, Betty met the love of her life, Joe, and they were married on April 11th, 1966. Together, Betty and Joe had three children, Lisa, Kevin and Brian. Betty was a devout member of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church and the Catholic Women’s League. Betty also spent many hours volunteering for the Development & Peace Organization.
Betty always had the biggest smile on her face and offered the warmest hugs. Betty’s greatest joys in life were her children and grandchildren. She always loved spending time with her granddaughters, whether that was baking Christmas cookies together, playing at the park, or teaching them how to paint. If she wasn’t caring for her grandchildren, you could find her in the garden. Betty was known for her green thumb, as she could even keep a poinsettia plant alive throughout the year! Betty was also a gifted artist and spent many hours painting beautiful landscapes and crafting pottery.
Betty was predeceased by her parents, John and Ellen, siblings; Annie, Pat, Jim, Teresa, Margaret, Frank, John and Mary, and her loving husband, Joe. Betty is survived by her children; Lisa (Gary), Kevin, and Brian (Shauna), and grandchildren; Lauren (Josh), Lexi (Owen), Maya and Brenna. Betty is also survived by her sister Joan, her brothers Peter and Kevin, and numerous nieces and nephews.
