The Kenora Riding will be left much the same in a report released by the Federal Electoral District Redistribution Committee.
Originally the southern part of Kenora Riding was going to be merged with Thunder Bay-Rainy River.
Kenora MP Eric Melillo credits all the people that spoke out against the changes.
“It’s not official yet, but I’m happy to see that the Commission heard the concerns that were raised,” says Melillo.
“I want to thank everyone for raising concerns. We had community leaders and residents from across the district either show up in person, or make submissions, to be engaged in this process, and that’s the reason why we’ll be maintaining our riding.”
Melillo adds there are some minor changes to the riding to align northern First Nations with their governing bodies.
“I think they listened to the concerns that were raised across the northwest. Primarily the inclusion of Kenora with the Thunder Bay District. That would not have been a strong idea for representation in our district. Pleased they kept, more or less the same riding, with the exception of the First Nations that are included in the Mattawa Council.”
The Riding will get a name change through.
It will be called Kenora-Kiiwetinoong.
The Committee’s recommendations still have to get approval from MP’s before the final report is adopted in September.
