A devastating fire at a six-unit apartment complex has left 30 people without a home in Shoal Lake #40 First Nation.
The fire took place early Saturday morning and the entire building is reported to be a loss. Six families say they’ve lost everything.
Two community members were treated for smoke inhalation, while another suffered minor injuries trying to save their dog from the blaze – but families were able to make it out safely.
Residents say the nearest fire department is 45 minutes away in Falcon Lake, fire hydrants near the building weren’t working and the community’s firetruck was waiting for repairs.
Community leadership is asking family and friends to come together to help the families who lost their homes in the Sixplex fire, and donations are being arranged.
All funds will help replace personal items lost in the fire, as well as support families with food and bills during this time.
Two GoFundMe pages have been created. They can be found HERE and HERE.
Household items, clothing and food can all be dropped off at Shoal Lake #40’s Band office gym.
Any cash and in-hand donations can also be left with Cathy Green, who can be reached at 204-869-8910.
