It’s taking long than expected to get the water running again on the Wabaseemoong Independent Nations.
It was hoped the water treatment plant in the community would be running again by the end of January.
But the band says it could be another month before water is running again, and the boil water
advisory will be back in place.
That’s because damage at the water treatment plant is more extensive than thought, after diesel contamination
was discovered at the end of 2022.
As a temporary solution, a water pump will directly feed water from the treatment plant into the water tower.
But it will take another four weeks to that operational, with three weeks to get the equipment needed and another week to monitor the system, to make sure it’s working properly.
Once the temporary pump is in place, the community will have to boil their water again, but residents will be able to do dishes, use toilets and take showers.
In the meantime, Wabaseemoong residents that have been evacuated will have to remain in Kenora or Winnipeg
and rooms and support services are being extended.
