The Northwestern Health Unit is expected to release a study on the feasibility of a safe injection site for drugs in the Kenora area later
this winter.
Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Kit Young Hoon says they have gathered all the information together and a working on a final report.
“The study looks at best practices, it looks at the burden of illness from opioid overdoses within the Kenora area,” explains Dr. Young Hoon.
“It interviewed people who use drugs, stakeholder agencies and the general public.”
She adds that survey was also conducted about having a safe injection site in the Kenora area.
“Trying to pull all that information together to get a really comprehensive overview what the benefits and the risks are with supervised consumption services for the Kenora area and what might be done to implement it in a successful way.”
At a public meeting held last month by the City of Kenora, several people spoke about the need for a safe consumption site.
