A funeral will take place today (Wednesday) for an OPP officer killed in the line of duty in southern Ontario last week.
Local Inspector Jeff Duggan says the death of 28-year-old Greg Pierzchala shows the need for an overhaul of the criminal justice system.
“It’s happening more and more often…we’re getting first responders that are murdered, killed, assaulted, on the streets here and everywhere else,” says Duggan.
“I think we do have to look at the justice system as a whole and re-evaluate what we’re doing with it.”
Duggan adds the bail system has to be looked at to make sure it’s working.
“We have a lot of people that are out on bail with some serious charges. We really need to look at the justice system and a full review of when we are letting people out. What resources are we providing them? What help are they getting when they are in custody…while they are on remand?”
The OPP constable just passed his 10 month probationary period and was killed by a suspect who was out on bail and had a prohibition from having any kind of weapons.
The funeral for Constable Greg Pierzchala will take place in Barrie.
