A change in voting for the Municipal election in Ignace.
NeuVote is handling this years election in the Township and company CO Matthew Heuman says casting a ballot will be done electronically or over the phone.
Heuman says this system is very user friendly.
“You go in. There’s a code that you have to put in to prove who you are and that code is unique to each voter. They also then put in their date of birth that is associated to the code and the uniqueness of the voter and then once that’s done, they sign a declaration stating that they are an eligible voter for the Township of Ignace and then they make their selection.”
Heuman adds, “It’s the same as casting a ballot into a ballot box. Once that final button has been pressed it’s completely mixed up so that we don’t grab any details about who the voter is. It is completely a secret. Completely anonymous.”
He notes, “You can still go down to the Municipal Office and cast a vote. But this time you are going to be doing that on a laptop or a computer. The reason for that is it just streamlines the whole process, keeps all the votes in one place and the added benefit of anybody, seasonal workers, seasonal residents, or people that are working out of town, will have the opportunity to cast their vote from pretty much anywhere.
Voting ends at 8:00 pm on October 24 and Heuman says the results of the election should be confirmed within an hour.
If you haven’t received your voter information or have questions contact the Township of Ignace Office at 934-2202
Heuman stresses that electronic voting is quickly taking hold.
“Just over 13 million voters in Ontario and around 444 Municipalities, 350 of them this year, this election, have chosen to use online voting as an option.”
Heuman notes Ontario is the highest user of online voting technology in the entire world.
