The lack of public meeting on Bill 7 prompted the NDP to hold their own consultations on Monday.
The opposition party gave health care and seniors’ advocates an opportunity to share their concerns with the bill that will permit hospitals to move patients to long-term care homes to free up beds.
Jules Tupker, who sits on the Ontario North Family Council Network, says the fear in the north is patients being moved several kilometres away from family.
“Just ridiculous that they’re going to be forcing people to go to to homes or they don’t want to go or their families are not going to be able to to deal with them,”
Tupker says the bill will only added more stress to seniors and family members.
Thunder Bay-Superior North MPP Lise Vaugeois says it’s a bill that no longer treat patients as people.
“We are talking about widgets that are needed, that they want to move into a profitable widgets and that’s that’s what this is about and it’s utterly shameful,”
“This legislation is terrifying for families,” says Wayne Gates, NDP critic for Long-Term Care, Retirement Homes and Home care. “That Doug Ford wants to ram through this bill and silence the concerns of the people it will hurt most is alarming and shameful.”
The Ford government reject last week a NDP amendment calling for public meeting.
Instead, the PCs are using a time-allocation motion to bypass committee and bring the legislation to law.
