It’s pretty much business as usual at the Experimental Lakes Area this summer.
Over the last two years, the number of scientists and people who worked out at the ELA, just west of Vermilion Bay, were capped because of COVID-19.
Pauline Gerrard is deputy director and says a number of universities are currently doing some experiments there.
“We have had a very busy field season,” says Gerrard.
“There’s been a group from the University of Toronto and Queen’s doing work on micro-plastics. We’ve been partnering with a group from the University of Texas on one of the chemicals on road tire dust.”
Gerrard adds that the high water this year has also added to the challenges the ELA has faced, as their road was washed out earlier this spring.
