The Experimental Lakes area just east of Kenora is getting another $11.7 million over five years from the federal government.
Pauline Gerrard is the deputy director and says it comes from the Major Science Initiatives Fund from the
Canada Foundation for Innovation.
“The ELA is absolutely unique and is doing freshwater science here in Canada that is not happening anywhere else and it’s having a huge impact,” explains Gerrard.
“So we applied for the opportunity and we were granted funding with the announcement just last week.”
Gerrard adds the money will be put to good use.
“We’re hoping in the next year to start building a new center for education, which will give us some new accommodation space, and really help us expand the science. To be able to do that, we’ll need core operating costs to keep the facility going.”
The money is on top of funding from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and the Province of Ontario.
