Caleb Sakchekapo

On August 13, 2022, Caleb Sakchekapo of North Caribou Lake First Nation passed away peacefully at his home.
Caleb Sakchekapo was orphaned at an early age and was raised by his grandmother, Emma Sakchekapo, supported by the older siblings and extended family of North Caribou Lake First Nation.
Caleb started his working career as a school janitor and commercial fishing. He then went on to work at the Hudson’s Bay Trading Post in Sachigo until 1963. He then moved to Round Lake to open his own Co-Op store in 1964. During this time he also managed the ONA Store from 1998 until 2020. He stepped away from the Co-Op store to begin a full time career with Bell Canada as a technician in 1976 until his retirement at 65 years old. During his working years he also served as Chief and a Band Councillor and in 1999 started working with his church as a board member until he was no longer able.
The late Caleb Sakchekapo is survived by his wife of 59 years, Greta Sakchekapo, children; Sheila (Mike) Gabrie, Leo (Judy Patayash) Sakchekapo, Karen Sakchekapo, and Caleb Jr. (Nancy) Sakchekapo, grandchildren; Michael (Diane) Gabrie, Zachary Gabrie, Albert (Dayna) Gabrie, Larissa (Jordan Mamakeesic) Sakchekapo, Marissa Sakchekapo, Rebekah Sakchekapo, Josephine Sakchekapo, Dallas Sakchekapo, Joss Sakchekapo, Dakota (Marcia) Sakchekapo, Alyssa (Conor Meekis) Sakchekapo, Alaina Sakchekapo, CJ Sakchekapo and Alivia Sakchekapo, siblings; Harry Sakchekapo, Sarah Quequish, Raymond (Beatrice) Adams, Caroline Quequish, Lucy (Billy Thompson) Adams, and Phyllis (Pierre) Morriseau, in-laws; Sarah (Joe) Tait, Agnes Kam, Ophilia Kam, Hilda (Samuel) Benson, Frances McKoop, Cyril ( Emma) Mekenack, Richard (Mariah) Mekenack and Ida (Henry) McKay.
Caleb is predeceased by his father James Sakchekapo, mother Penia Quequish, customary parents Tommy and Eva Adams, grandfather Sena Sakchekapo, grandmother Emma Sakchekapo, siblings; Thomas Adams, Innes Sakchekapo, Albert Sakchekapo, Sadie Chikane, and Ina Kanate, son Roy Sakchekapo, grandchildren; Troy Sakchekapo, Eric Sakchekapo and Emily Sakchekapo, father and mother in-law David and Rubina Mekenack, and sister in-laws Elizabeth Tait and Sherry-Anne Mekenack (infant).
A viewing service will be held on Tuesday, August 16, 2022 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Dryden Community Funeral Home, 249 Grand Trunk Avenue, Dryden, ON P8N 2X3.
Funeral Services will be held at the Weagamow Evangelical Fellowship on Thursday, August 18, 2022 at 1 p.m with Ivan Wapenisk and Jerry Quequish officiating. He will be laid to rest at the Weagamow Lake Cemetery.
