Three local Indigenous athletes are home with medals.
Dryden’s Riah Compardo and Jade Windigo as well as Atikokan’s Kathryn Lacosse represented our area on Team Ontario competing in the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships in Membertou, Nova Scotia.
The Under 18 Boys team won gold with a 3-2 win over Saskatchewan in the championship game.
Windigo, who is a member of Lac Seul First Nation, finished the tournament with a goal and an assist.
The Under 18 Girls ended up with a silver medal following a heartbreaking 3-2 setback to Manitoba in the final game.
Ontario was up 2-0 late in the third before Manitoba mounted a furious comeback.
Compardo, a member of Animakee Wa Zhing #37, recorded 2 goals and 4 assists in the tournament, while Lacosse, who is a member of Wabigoon Lake Ojibway First Nation, had 3 goals and 2 assists.
