Domtar is working diligently with the province to manage the lake level on Wabigoon Lake.
The company manages the dam on the Wabigoon River adjacent to the Dryden mill.
Regional Public Affairs Manager Bonny Skene says levels are now above the upper threshold set out by their Management Plan by about 12 inches (or 30 centimetres).
The plan is approved by the Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry and prescribes a lower limit and an upper limit for the lake level.
Skene notes the level has risen very quickly having come up by about 12 inches since May 6.
She says they are meeting daily with the Ministry, the City of Dryden and other government agencies and stakeholders to determine the best course of action to safely manage the extremely high level of water.
Skene notes precautionary measures are being taken to ensure the dam continues to function property and sandbags are being strategically placed in the area as a pre-emptive strike.
She is asking the public to stay away from fast moving water and river banks during these dangerous times.
Skene adds according to the records they have, the last time the lake level was this high was in 1941.
The dam was constructed initially back in 1913.
