A new lumber mill in Kenora could employ about 100 people.
That’s according to Unifor local national representative Stephen Boon.
He adds he’s glad Green First have been finally been able to announce it will be building a new mill.
“It went a little longer than everybody anticipated, I mean we thought that the mill would be up a lot sooner than it was,” says Boon.
“What we are happy about today is we actually have a path forward…and there’s actually a commitment. Finally, all the parties are on the same page moving forward.”
Boon adds the pandemic added to the timelines of the announcement.
“COVID didn’t help. That was the other unfortunate thing is that there was a lot of this stuff that was related to COVID and meetings. And that threw a wrench into everything in terms of delays in every part of this. So everything in this world right now, COVID has added six months…that was another factor.”
On Friday, Green First announce it will be decommissioning the Kenora Forest Products mill and building a new state-of-the-art mill elsewhere in the city.
No location for the mill has been decided yet.
