A major winter storm across the Northwest is possible Wednesday into Friday.
Environment Canada says there is uncertainty about the exact track of the system, but if it holds to early predictions, we’re in for a pile of fresh snow.
In a special weather statement issued Sunday, Environment Canada says it is expecting total snowfall accumulations of 25 to 40 cm along with strong wind gusts leading to widespread blowing snow and near zero visibility in heavy snow and blowing snow.
The alert runs from the Manitoba border through Kenora, Dryden, Ignace, north through to Red Lake and Sioux Lookout as well as Fort Frances and Atikokan.
A strong low pressure system is expected to track over northwestern Ontario bringing a couple days of heavy snow and blowing snow. Snow is expected to begin Wednesday afternoon and continue through Thursday into Friday morning. Snow may be mixed with ice pellets at times. Total snowfall amounts in excess of 40 cm are possible with the heaviest snow falling Wednesday night and Thursday.
At the same time, an alert is in place for Winnipeg and southern Manitoba for snow and high winds starting Tuesday and continuing through Thursday.
There is considerable uncertainty in the exact track of this low pressure system and total snowfall amounts as a result.
