Canada is following in the footsteps of the European Union, the United Kingdom and United States by punishing Putin and Sergei Lavrov for the country’s attack on Ukraine.
57 individuals in Belarus are also being sanctioned for aiding the efforts.
Sanctions Against Russia
- Asset freezes on major banks and wealthy individuals
- Restrictions on the Russian government and companies’ ability to conduct transactions in dollars and pounds
- Limiting access to technology for energy, military and other high-tech equipment
- A hold on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline to Germany
Trudeau told reporters Friday that Canada will also support Russia’s removal from the SWIFT banking system, which will disable the country from making transactions around the world.
