Ontario’s Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing says he is well aware of the housing crisis facing northwestern Ontario.
There have been growing calls for immediate government help in recent days.
Steve Clark says they want to find a solution but notes the federal government has a role to play.
“We’re shortchanged about 490 million dollars for community housing from the federal government,” explains Clark.
“There was a recent Scotiabank study that showed that based on a per capita average in the G-7, we’re last.”
Clark admits it is a provincial responsibility but notes they need the federal government to chip in their fair share.
“Canada needs to build 1.8 million housing units. In Ontario, of that 1.8 million we have to build 1.2 million. So Ontario has the lion’s share of the housing need.”
Clark says the end goal is finding a way to get shovels in the ground more quickly.
