Kenora MP Eric Melillo isn’t making any predictions on who should or will be next leader of the federal Conservatives.
Melillo is reacting to Wednesday’s vote to oust Erin O’Toole.
“I’m thankful to Erin and his family for their service to our party, to our country. I thought he put forward a very positive plan in the last election campaign and we made some very great strides as a party picking up seats in areas where we don’t traditionally do well and as well winning the popular vote for the second straight election.”
Melillo admits tensions within the party regarding a change in leadership and Wednesday was a tough day to witness this kind of shake-up.
However, Melillo believes new interim leader and Manitoba MP Candice Bergen will do an incredible job getting the party through the next few months before a leadership race.
“It will be interesting to see who puts their names forward to do so but I’m looking forward to our membership having a say and helping guide the direction of our party going forward.”
A number of names are being mentioned as potential candidates.
I’d like to thank the Hon. @erinotoole for his service to our party and our country.
Being Leader of the Opposition requires immense sacrifice, for both the leader and their family, and I know we’re all grateful for the contribution of the O’Toole family to our movement.
