Local school boards are mulling over whether to revert back to a two semester system later this month.
The Keewatin-Patricia District School Board has already said high schools will be sticking with the quadmester system.
Going forward, Medical Officer of Health for the Northwestern Health Unit Dr. Kit Young Hoon says she has no problem with the semester system.
“A semester system has significant benefits for the child,” says Young Hoon. “So I think there are a number of factors that could be considered also, so things like staffing might play into that type of decision. So we’ve told school boards either option would be reasonable at this point.”
Boards went to the quadmester system to limit COVID-19 exposure, the number of students moving around the school and have less cohorts with only two classes a day.
Dr. Young Hoon adds boards have to consider what’s going to happen long term as well.
“We are hopeful in the spring this will be less of an issue. So it’s useful to think what’s going to occur in February, but also April, May, and June.”
The Kenora Catholic District School Board will be making it’s decision soon.
