A preliminary transportation plan and transportation planning framework have been released by the Nuclear Waste Management Organization.
Transportation Engagement Manager Caitlin Burley says the documents address questions raised during recent consultations as the Ignace/Wabigoon area considers becoming a host site of an underground repository.
Key updates include the importance of Indigenous voices in the planning process and an acknowledgement that people have concerns about exisiting infrastructure gaps and impacts.
Burley says in addition, the document reflects a need to continue to engage with the public to ensure it remains aligned with their priorities over the 20-year planning process.
She notes the purpose is to advance conversations and provide more information on how it plans to safely transport used nuclear fuel.
Burley says transportation of used nuclear fuel won’t happen for at least 20-years and they want to ensure a safe and socially acceptable plan is in place.
She stresses public engagement is key and will continue noting these are living documents that will be updated at least every three years.
“Very interested in listening to diverse perspectives on this planning program. Engagement is what we’re all about. Understanding what people are concerned about is fundamental to our program so that we can address those questions over our planning timeframe”, says Burley.
