The Northwest Catholic District School Board is strengthening its work to support the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action.
Rochelle Bird has been hired as the new Indigenous Wellness Navigator.
She is a graduate of Lakehead University and majored in Indigenous Learning.
Bird has taught in a wide range of environments that include occasional instruction in Grades K to 12, as well as teaching at both Confederation College and Seven Generations Education Institute.
She also worked at the United Native Friendship Centre over the past 13 years and incorporated Anishinaabe culture into her daily programming.
The Board says her career has focused on supporting children, youth and their families with their mental, emotional, spiritual and physical health and well-being.
Officials note she has a wide range of experience in supporting and developing strength based, culturally appropriate services to support the needs of Indigenous students and families.
The Board says Bird is excited to begin her work to ensure that relevant Indigenous cultural teachings are infused throughout programs in catholic schools in Dryden, Sioux Lookout and the Rainy River District.
