Lake of the Woods District Hospital in Kenora says it has done its own investigation after a patient died after being discharged from the Emergency Department.
Brent Sky from the Shoal Lake #40 First Nation died 24 hours after his ER visit from a brain bleed.
Hospital president and CEO Ray Racette says unfortunately due to patient confidentiality regulations, they can’t say what happened.
“We will never be able to tell our story publicly and it’s very hard for us to defend the decision-making…the care effort and any of that,” says Racette.
“It puts us completely at a disadvantage in terms of being truthful, in terms of what happened.”
Racette says they have conducted their own investigation into the incident.
“Going through everything that happened in the process of care and all the decisions that were made during care. All the information that we gained both from Brent when he was in our care, but it’s also the clinical decision-making and all the different things that play out in care. All of that will be shared with the family.”
Racette adds they were planning to meet with Sky’s family earlier this week, but that had to be rescheduled to a later date because of poor weather.
Ontario’s Chief Coroner is also doing an investigation on the case.
Sky’s death made national news this past week and there are suggestions racism played a role.
