Some holiday relief for the Hoshizaki House in Dryden courtesy of Unifor.
The union has made a $2,000 donation to support operations at the shelter.
It’s part of a $158,000 investment to help 78 other women’s shelters across Canada.
Unifor National President Jerry Dias says it is critical to assist local shelters as they provide life-saving assistance as frontline providers of crisis services to women and children who are living with domestic violence.
Local 324 President Katrina Peterson says the pandemic has clearly exasperated stress levels in many families and it is imperative that they support Hoshizaki House and the life saving role they provide for vulnerable women and children in the area.
Unifor Women’s Director Lisa Kelly says they are seeing increased pressure on shelters to provide services during the pandemic.
Kelly adds their donations are coupled with continued activism to address the roots of gender inequality.
She says they have seen pre-existing inequalities exacerbated through COVID.
Kelly notes the union remains committed at the bargaining table, and in their political action, to push for systemic change.
