A walk and vigil was held in Dryden Monday night to recognize National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
The event was organized by Unifor Local 324 Women’s Committee and the Hoshizaki House on the 32nd anniversary of the Montreal Ecole Polytechnique mass shooting.
The shooting took place on December 6, 1989 when a man opened fire in a classroom, killing 14 women and injuring others.
Katrina Peterson is the President of Unifor Local 324 and says it’s important to raise awareness here at home.
“Unifor supports Hoshizaki House both at the national and local level. Shelters have been greatly affected by the pandemic with reported increases in violence combined with limited resources.”
Peterson adds they are actively campaigning for the implementation of a national plan on gender based violence.
She is encouraging everyone to write their local MP on the importance of supporting this plan, stressing we can all be part of the solution.
Peterson says, “As a union and individually, what we can do to help protect women from violence is recognize it, speak up, support victims, and provide education in our workplaces, our homes, and our social settings.”
