Canada is tightening up its restrictions at the border for air travellers due to the potentially dangerous new Omicron COVID-19 variant.
Travellers will now need to be tested when arriving at the airport and isolate until they get their results, even if double-vaxxed.
The rule does not yet apply to visitors from the United States.
Canada has also added new countries to the list of nations subjected to federal travel restrictions, including Egypt, Malawi, and Nigeria.
Premier Doug Ford commented on the enhanced measures today, stressing he supports the move.
“First of all it was my request to the federal government and they acted very quickly on that request and I appreciate the collaboration. As for the United States, we will have further discussions with the federal government and the other premiers and territories as well to get their input.”
In dealing with possible travel restrictions involving the U.S., Ford says, “We’re going to be super cautious. Everything is on the table right now. We’re not going to leave anything out. It just hasn’t hit that point yet and we’re going to have further conversations.”
A federal review is underway for our vaccine booster strategy as this variant is considered highly mutated.
