The Chief Medical Officer of Health for the Northwestern Health Unit stresses the COVID vaccine works despite a recent spike in cases among vaccinated people.
Some may be questioning its effectiveness but Dr. Kit Young Hoon says it’s known to be 90 per cent effective after two doses.
Dr. Young Hoon admits you can still contract the virus with both shots, but points out in most cases individuals are constantly involved and in close contact with unvaccinated people.
She is encouraging everyone to get at least the two shots.
Dr. Young Hoon says locally 90.1 per cent of those over the age of 12 have at least one dose, with 85.7 per cent with two shots.
She notes 6.1 per cent have had a third or booster dose.
When it comes to the youth vaccination program, Dr. Young Hoon says 4.6 per cent of those aged 5 to 11 have their first dose.
Dr. Young Hoon says the number is low because their allocation arrived later than expected.
Six-point-four per cent of children in Ontario have received the vaccine.
