Hoshizaki House Dryden District Crisis Shelter is shining a light on violence against women in the region.
It’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and the first of 16 days of activism against gender based violence.
The City of Dryden is one of over 60 communities across Ontario raising a flag and declaring a proclamation at their respective City Halls in honour of the day.
“In our community, I wouldn’t say it’s a hidden issue but we’re not quite there yet in the fight towards ending gender based violence,” says Stacey Lambe, Executive Director of Hoshizaki House. “It’s going to be a long road ahead of us but we’re definitely taking the right steps in the right direction. The more we advocate, the more we educate, hopefully we’ll be able to break down the stigma and silence.”
Lambe notes proclamations and flag raisings assures survivors they are not alone and signifies a commitment to end gender based violence in our community.
“We need people to speak out and to take action by doing these pieces and showing your support and promoting, you’re helping to take that stance and step forward towards ending gender based violence.”
Lambe stresses the issue to be addressed at it’s roots and structural causes, through prevention, education and supporting the call for Canada to implement a fully funded national action plan to end gender based violence.
1 in 3 women and girls experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime.
