The Chief of Keewaywin First Nation has issued an open letter on behalf of Council on the sentencing of two of three people charged in the 2018 beating death of community member Ashley McKay.
George Kakekagumick says the recent rulings are unacceptable.
Earlier this week, Marlene Kwandibens pleaded guilty to a charge of manslaughter and was sentenced to eight years, while Teryl Michon, was sentenced to six-and-a-half years to be followed by three years probation.
The third person, Darren Oombash, who was charged with second-degree murder will appear in court later this month.
Kakekagumick says based on the evidence and the agreed statement of facts, the guilty parties should receive a more appropriate punishment for their crimes.
He adds the individuals showed little to no remorse for their actions and deserve longer sentences.
Kakekagumick stresses there is something seriously wrong with Canada’s judicial system and is asking the courts to review the case.
