Gerhard (Gary) Martin Mantey, 81, passed away on November 14th , 2021 at home in Dryden.
Devoted husband of Irmtrud (Irma) Mantey (nee Duettchen). He is survived by sister Louise Niemi of Thunder Bay ON, and brother Walter (Terezinha) of Dryden ON, and sister-in-law Carolee Duttchen of Vancouver BC. Father of Delores (Anthony) Peters of Port Hope ON and Martin (Jacqueline) Mantey of Corner Brook NL, grandfather of Hayley Peters of Edmonton AB, Aaron Peters of Maple ON, Zander Mantey and Riley Mantey of Corner Brook NL. Uncle to Lorna (Rob) Larsen of Huntsville ON, Linda (Pat) McMullen and Sharon Niemi of Winnipeg MB, Paul Niemi of Thunder Bay ON, Wayne (Kim) Mantey of Dryden ON and Ken (Michelle) Mantey of North Bay ON, Robert (Diane) Dϋttchen of Winnipeg MB, David (Kaylene) Dϋttchen of Calgary AB, Christa (Peter) McCann of Vancouver Eastside BC and Deborah (Neyt) Lum of Calgary AB.
Predeceased by parents Adolf and Magdalena Mantey, brothers Harry, Heine, and Willi Mantey and sister-in-law Ina all of Dryden ON, sister Erika Knipfel and brother-in-law Fred Knipfel of Petersburg ON and brother-in-law Kauko Niemi of Thunder Bay ON and brother-in-law Rev Helmut (Art) Dϋttchen of Kingman AZ USA. He was also a godfather to many.
Gary was born in Dryden , and was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran church in Waldhof. He attended a one room school in Waldhof and then high school in Dryden. He married Irma in 1961 and they moved to Eton Rugby in 1963 to their gentleman farm. He worked for 37 years at the Pulp and Paper Mill in Dryden when he retired to full time farming, expanding by renting neighbouring fields and delivering hay with his three ton truck. Over the course of time he hired Jason McKee who continued his friendship even after moving to Calgary. In 2009 they moved into Dryden to fully retire. Gary enjoyed fishing, moose hunting, playing cards, travel and having his 1957 Monarch Turnpike Cruiser restored and visiting his many friends. He was active at the church serving as a Sunday school teacher, elder, and usher.
