This is George Hipwood Smith.
George is one of the 6 men from Ear Falls who decided in the dead of winter to join the fight in Europe. There were many locals from the Ear Falls (Gold Pines) area who enlisted but these 6 gentlemen couldn’t wait for summer. The six men said goodbye to their families not knowing if they would ever see them again and set out to walk the 90 plus miles across Lac Seul.
Ironically after the long journey to Sioux lookout one of the men was denied access to the infantry due to being flat footed. He returned on his own while the rest were trained and shipped off.
George would serve a total of 6 years before returning to his loving family.
George was shot and wounded in Holland while taking down a Nazi flag from a German position they had sacked. Instead of shipping home George decided to heal up and continue to fight with his brothers in arms.
George returned to Ear Falls where he spent the rest of his life until 1976 when he passed away from a battle with cancer.
