Gilbert Coutts was from Oxdrift.
Gilbert enlisted and trained in Winnipeg, and was allowed to come home on leave to help with the harvest on the family farm.
Gilbert was in the first wave of Canadian troops at Juno beach, was captured two days after the invasion and spent time as a prisoner of war, escaping and being recaptured twice. He was liberated in the closing year of the war by American troops.
He returned to Dryden after the war and worked at the mill for many years.
Gilbert passed away in 2015
