It’s time to remember our veterans who have fallen and/or served our country.
Remembrance Day is next Thursday and the national poppy campaign is underway.
Poppies are available at various locations and at Royal Canadian Legions across the region.
This year marks 100 years of the significance of the Flanders Fields flower.
Karen Hewitson and Carol Peterson were guests on the CKDR Morning Show Tuesday to promote the campaign in Dryden.
The two, representing the Royal Canadian Legion, were involved in organizing the beautiful display around the Cenotaph.
Hewitson says, “Our veterans are all leaving us and we just wanted to bring more awareness to the community. Hopefully, kids asking more questions and parents answering them. We just wanted to pay some tribute to our veterans.”
The project was a year in the making and involved some 13 volunteers.
Peterson says they have expanded the program this year.
“Signs that we are selling, we do have French and English, it’s a sign that can be displayed in a store window if they choose or to use the wire and actually just put it in the ground and stand it up in the yard.”
Signs are $20.
Peterson says, “It is another part of the money raised through the poppy fund and supporting our veterans locally. It says ‘We Will Remember Them’. There’s a Legion logo on the left bottom corner and it says ‘Thank You'”.
