This is Treaties Recognition Week in Ontario.
Indigenous Affairs Minister Greg Rickford says they recognize the week because Treaties remain important.
“Treaties form the basis of the relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. They remain just as relevant today as when they were first signed. I’ve seen first hand the importance of making modern treaty relationships real and meaningful for Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.”
The Kenora-Rainy River MPP is encouraging students and the public to learn about treaties from diverse First Nations perspectives and supporting greater understanding of the importance of treaties in the province.
“Deepening our collective awareness and understanding of treaties can help us nurture and advance these relationships and help us move forward together along the path of meaningful reconciliation.”
Rickford says his government is committed to strengthening equitable and respectful relationships with Indigenous partners and communities to enable a better future for all Ontarians.
This is the 6th annual Treaties Awareness Week and it runs until November 7.
