Sioux Lookout is taking the first steps to rename Umfreville Park.
Chief Administrative Officer Michelle Larose says the Municipal Truth and Reconciliation Committee has been discussing how they can recognize the Indigenous history and culture of their community by renaming sites like Umfreville.
Larose stresses they want to reflect the rich Anishninaabe territory the Municipality is located on.
A work plan is being prepared along with timelines and the objective is to have a new name ready to present to Council in the Spring of 2022.
There is a process to rename the park that will be followed, including receiving permission from the province and community engagement.
The Municipality will be gathering name suggestions from the public, creating a short list of names, having a public voting period and seek name approval.
