It’s the season of giving and Dryden families in need will have an extra special Thanksgiving meal.
The Dryden Food Bank is putting together Thanksgiving food hampers.
“This week we’ve been asking those that support us to give us some extra items, whether it’s stove top stuffing or some cranberry sauce, potatoes, canned vegetables-whatever we would normally eat for a Thanksgiving meal so that our clients at the Food Bank can have those extras in their food hamper this week, “says Manager Al Huckabay.
Several local businesses and organizations have also stepped up with contributions.
“This past weekend the crafters market that was at Eagle’s Landing, they raised over a thousand pounds of food and just over 24 hundred dollars in cash donations to help us out this season,” says Huckabay.
Huckabay stresses food insecurity is still very much present in the community.
“We’re still averaging over a 100 families (accessing the food bank) a month more than last year’s figures at this time. So that shows us that families are in need and are accessing the food bank to help them through a time of insecurity in their lives, being able to provide food for themselves, families and their children. We’re just thankful we’ve been able to maintain product on our shelves to be able to give to them. It’s a concern that all food banks right now are facing across the region. Thankfully, communities are surrounding their food banks and helping them out through these times when there is extra need.”
The final day to drop off food for Thanksgiving hampers or to make a monetary donation is Friday from 9am-3pm.
Hampers can still be requested by phoning the Food Bank at 807-223-3881 from 9am-11:30am.
