Dryden Fire Service is ready to welcome community members to Fire Prevention night.
It’s Fire Prevention Week and this year’s theme is ‘Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety’.
Fire Chief Chris Wood says it’s important to understand what the different sounds mean so you know what to do in an emergency.
“The first sound is the low battery chirp and that indicates that the smoke or carbon monoxide alarm battery needs to be replaced and of course we want to check those and make sure we’re replacing the batteries and testing them every month. The second sound is a smoke alarm when it goes into an activated sound, which means there’s smoke present and everyone needs to get out of the house, get to your meeting place and call 911.”
A number of activities and demonstrations are planned at the fire hall tonight (Wednesday October 6) from 5:30-7:30pm.
“We’re going to do an auto extrication demo, which we typically do, as well as a firefighter fitness course,” says Chief Wood. “We’re going to have a bunker gear station so you can try on some gear and we’ll have an alarm station so that we can answer any questions about smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.”
There will also be a colouring contest for kids and trucks on display with local firefighters on hand to answer questions.
When it comes to other fire safety tips, Chief Wood stresses residents should always know two ways out.
“Keep testing your alarms, make sure they work and have those conversations with your family and make sure you have a really good plan. It doesn’t take a lot of time to make sure that everyone understands what to do when they hear those sounds (alarms) so they can get to a safe place, call 911 and get out safely-that’s the most important part.”
